Winter Storms and how they can damage your Bowleys Quarter Maryland Property
11/14/2021 (Permalink)
Winter storms can cause significant damage to your Sparrows Point property if you are not prepared. During power outages during a winter storm, using a generator will keep you and your family warm, as reduce the risk of frozen pipes.
Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal burning device INSIDE a home, basement, garage, crawlspace or even partially enclosed area.
If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather, follow the safety tips below (from the American Red Cross).
- To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure such as under a tarp held up by poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
- Opening doors and windows or fans will not prevent Carbon monoxide build up in the home. Although Carbon monoxide can’t be smelled, it can rapidly build up and lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed. IF you start to feel dizzy, week, sick while using a generator, get to fresh air IMMEDIATELY
- Install Carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside of sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

How clean is the standing water in your Chase water damaged home?
11/7/2021 (Permalink)
When your home or business suffers from a water damage, its critical to know the difference between different levels of contaminated water. There are 3 classes of water, Clean, Gray and Black. Understanding the class of water is quintessential into understanding the severity of your Water or Storm damage and the risk it poses on those exposed.
Clean water: Clean water is water from a broken pipe, water from a hot water heater, or sink. If you can safely say that the water on Could you drink this water? If yes, then you have a clean water source water damage. If no, or if it’s a clean water source that has been out for more than 24 hours, read on to the next classes of water, Gray and black.
Gray water: Water that is slightly contaminated, such as water from a clean water source that leaked through a ceiling, or clean water that was left untreated. Gray water has bacteria and other contaminates beginning to grow.
Black water: Is water that is highly contaminated, filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals, viruses and more. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding, or any type of natural disaster. Black water should never be handled by the homeowner and should always be handled by a trained certified professional. Black water is sometimes a misnomer, black water is not always black, sometimes it appears clear, but if it comes below a drain trap in a shower, washing machine or sink, and NOT the faucet, its considered black, contaminated water, with an unknown contamination time.

Water damage restoration can be expensive, but it’s more expensive to wait. A water damage specialist will be able to dry the structure, carpet, and hardwood, and salvage contents such as clothing and electronics but not everyone is equipped to do this (WE ARE!). If the water damage in your home is not treated within by a professional within 48-72 hours of the initial leak, it’s highly likely you will get mold, which will cause the removal process to become more hazardous, and difficult to remove as time allows the mold to grow and spread.

Why Storms cause Sewer Back Ups in Bowleys Quarters Maryland
8/14/2021 (Permalink)
A sewer backing up, or contaminated water backing out of your tub, sink or toilet can be an absolute nightmare for Bowleys Quarters homeowners. Sewer backups happen frequently during storms because the sewer system is overwhelmed causing it to "back-up" through your toilet or drains.
The truth is you can’t (and shouldn’t) do very much; sewage contaminated water is dangerous to your health and should be avoided at all costs. If you have water backing up out of toilet, sink or bathtub in your Colgate home, then follow these steps and call SERVPRO of Sparrows Point Essex/Chase
410-633-4383
Your Game Plan
- Stay out of the area/avoid cross contamination
- Determine the source
- Arrange repair and cleanup services with SERVPRO of Sparrows Point/Essex/Chase or your local SERVPRO/Water restoration company
- Call your Insurance Company
Keep Children and Pets away from sewer-water affected areas
Keep children and pets away the moment sewer water is discovered, until the clean-up crew and sanitation is complete. Sewage is Category 3 water, more commonly known as black water. Category 3 water or Black water is defined by the IICRC as “the worst classification and is grossly unsanitary. It could cause severe illness or death if ingested” Keep children and pets away at all times and if you yourself must go in the area, wash your hands thoroughly and avoid touching cuts, eyes, mouth or ears with your hands or any item that came in contact with the black water.
Risks of Sewage back up debris
Category 3 water/Raw sewage contains diseases such as Hepatitis, Salmonella, E.Coli and Parasites just to name a few, would you risk cleaning this yourself without proper training or the tools and chemicals to do it correctly? These diseases survive weeks even months if not properly killed. Doing it yourself, or hiring the wrong professional puts you, your family, pets and house guests at a great risk. Call SERVPRO of Sparrows Point/Essex/Chase to schedule emergency Service to have the job taken care of "Like it never even happened."
Determine whether the waste is local (as in, from your own home) or from the sewer system also known as “backflow”
IF you are able to do some inspecting, then determine the source by the amount and the flow rate. Determine the source of the sewage backup – if entering the area seems like it would be dangerous to your health (no proper protective equipment) then just skip on down to arrange services. A local waste product would be from a blockage, tree roots affecting plumbing lines or broken or collapsed lines on your property, this waste would be from your own home but is still considered a category 3. Backflow is when the sewer system in your neighborhood or municipality is overwhelmed, and it reverses in your pipes, causing it to erupt from toilets, sinks and tubs. This can happen from heavy rain-flow overwhelming your municipality’s sewer system, causing it to backflow into your home.
Arrange Services with SERVPRO of Sparrows Point /Essex/Chase
Call an Emergency Restoration company such as SERVPRO of Sparrows Point Essex/Chase as we are IICRC Certified and specialize in cleaning up hazardous waste. Most contractors and plumbers do not have the capability to clean up the site after the repairs have been made and may not be approved by your insurance company if you choose to claim the loss.
SERVPRO also has a 1-4-8 policy, which means
- 1 hour from notice of loss - (When you call), a SERVPRO professional will contact you to arrange services.
- 4 hours of calling - a SERVPRO professional will be onside to start mitigating services (or your earliest convenience).
- 8 business hour- a verbal briefing of the scope will be communicated to your adjuster by a SERVPRO Professional.
Why call SERVPRO? If any SERVPRO believes they are incapable of responding within this time frame, they will refer you to a different SERVPRO so you are not left waiting!
Call your insurance company
Ask your agent if this is a covered loss, and what your deductible will be. This can be done before or after calling SERVPRO of Sparrows Point Essex/Chase as we accept all insurance plans and you can also pay yourself – whether you are covered or not.
If you are not covered, not a problem, we will begin services after a deposit has been made and the rest will be due upon completion. Please call for deposit details!

7 steps to prevent a fire damage in your kitchen – Sparrows Point, Maryland, USA.
- Stay in the kitchen – Fires happen when cooking is left unattended. If you have to leave the kitchen, turnoff the stove, and take pots and pans off the heat. This is especially important if you are broiling – remove food from the oven and turn off the broiler.
- Watch your clothing- Long sleeves that can get caught or catch onto things can catch fire. Instead wear short or close-fitting sleeves, and keep shirts tucked in or tied back with a well fitted apron.
- Beware of items around stovetop – move flammable items away from your stovetop before you begin cooking. Keep oven mitts, kitchen towels and appliance cords away from burners.
- Keep fire extinguisher in kitchen – keep a fire extinguisher nearby to put out any potential fire. Make sure the extinguisher is up to date and hasn’t expired.
- Learn your fire extinguisher – Read and get to know your fire extinguisher, practice operating it using expired fire extinguishers outside.
- Never throw hot grease in garbage can – hot grease can cause the contents of the trashcan to catch fire. Always pour hot grease into a heat safe container with a aluminum foil underneath to catch drips!
- Extinguish candles – candles themselves are a leading cause of fires in homes. Keep candles extinguished while cooking and if you do decide to use a candle in the kitchen, opt for short wide candles that are hard to tip over and keep the wick trimmed!

Bowleys Quarter Fire Damage Prevention Tip: How to Extinguish an Oven Fire
4/14/2021 (Permalink)
How to put out an oven fire to prevent a fire damage – Bowleys Quarters MD, USA
SERVPRO of Sparrows Point/Essex/Chase has cleaned smoke damage from hundreds of Bowleys Quarters homes since our doors opened in 2001. Oven fires are one of the main causes of smoke damage clean up in the Bowleys Quarters Maryland area and can happen for numerous reasons:
- Fat and grease splatter, causes a flame
- When batter overflows
- Simply forgetting something in the oven
- using the self-cleaning feature.
- Electrical malfunction
Here are tips on how to put out an oven fire:
What to do if something in the oven catches fire
- Leave the oven door closed! – this will starve the fire of oxygen.
- Turn off the oven and allow the fire to deplete existing oxygen in the oven.
- If it does not go out on its own, leave the house and call 911.
- If it does go out, thenopen your windows before opening the oven door. If you’re not positive, just wait a bit longer to be sure.
- With your fire extinguisher close-by, carefully open the oven door (it will be smoky!) and remove the hot pan.

Sparrows Point: Reduce your risk of a fire in your home or business by inspecting Storage areas
3/14/2021 (Permalink)
Reduce your risk of fire – inspect storage areas
At SERVPRO of Sparrows Point/Essex/Chase, we see many homes and businesses in eastern Baltimore county, experience fires. Many people are vigilant on checking areas of their home and keep smoke alarms up-to-date...but some areas may be forgotten, such as a garage, shed, or unfinished storage space within your home. Your garage, basement and yard can present hazards as well — in fact, they have the potential to be even more dangerous. Here are tips on what to inspect to prevent a fire in your garage, shed, or basement.
TIPS:
- Avoid cluttering debris or junk near your furnace or heater.
- Old newspapers piled in damp, warm places can actually self-combust — they don’t even have to be close to a heat source.
- Keep oil soaked rags in a metal container – think linseed oil, oil-based wood stains, oil rags from mechanical maintenance.
- Store flammable solvents and liquids in a fire cabinet
- If you have gasoline or other flammable liquids at home, keep them tightly sealed in metal containers and make sure they’re far away from heat sources, including the gas or charcoal grill you love to use in the summer.
- The grill itself should be at least 10 feet from your home and placed away from any overhead branches or structures.
If you've experienced a home fire, and aren't sure what to do, please call SERVPRO of Sparrows Point Essex/Chase, or your insurance agent.

Mold Remediation Vs. Mold Removal and what it means for your Essex Maryland Home
3/7/2021 (Permalink)
Essex Maryland -- Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

How to Escape a Burning Building
2/14/2021 (Permalink)
WARNING: If you are in a home fire RIGHT now, Call 9-1-1!
Timing is everything, in just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames. Here are things many people don’t expect after escaping a home fire, and tips on how to escape safely.
Fire is FAST! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a serious fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames - impairing vision and breathing.
Tip: make sure all fire alarms are in working condition and appropriately placed fire extinguishers
Fire is HOT! Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Inhaling this super-hot air will scorch your lungs and melt clothes to your skin.
Tip: Always crawl on the floor – the air will be cooler and there will be more oxygen.
Fire is DARK! Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness.
Smoke is DEADLY! Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do. Fire produces poisonous gases that disorient you. asphyxiation (suffocation) is the leading cause of death from home related fires.
Tip: If you open a door, open it slowly. Be ready to shut it quickly if heavy smoke or fire is present.

What to do if you have Mold in your Sparrow's Point, Maryland Home
2/2/2021 (Permalink)
Sparrows Point, Maryland has the optimum weather for mold growth – high humidity, in a flood prone area. Meaning unless a water damage is treated by a professional you have a higher mold contamination risk than others in Baltimore city or county. If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.
What to Do:
- Stay out of affected areas.
- Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
- Contact SERVPRO of Dundalk/Essex/Chase for mold remediation services.
What Not to Do:
- Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
- Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
- Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
- Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Eastern Baltimore County: here is what you do to get your flooded crawlspace under control
4/16/2020 (Permalink)
Follow these steps to regain control until help arrives.
If it can be done safely, determine the source, and stop water form coming in.
Did it rain like cats and dogs last night? Is water coming from the hot water heater? Maybe your refrigerator (sometimes, the ice maker line breaks and causes extensive flooding)? Turn the water off or skip to step two if it is storm related and it’s still raining.
Move items out of the wet areas
SERVPRO of Sparrows Point/ Essex/ Chase's number one tip: Do what you can without hurting yourself. Do not do heavy lifting or awkward bending if your doctor has instructed you not to. Start by “blocking” furniture (place aluminum foil under furniture legs or wood blocks; this prevents the furniture from staining the flooring, which happens often when a water damage occurs).
Wipe water excess from surfaces after removing lamps and objects on top, and move wet area rugs away from floors, their dyes often bleed and stain wood flooring and carpet. Perhaps the garage, or on top of a large trashbag/tarp.
The mitigation company should handle the rest, Here is how the SERVPRO System handles your contents
Remove excess water with towels, or Mop.
Blot or mop excess water from carpet with clean neutral colored towels and clean mops. (heavily dyed or soiled towels may bleed and dye the area).
Schedule repairs and mitigation services to restore your wet basement.
If you’ve determined the source, call to schedule to have it fixed immediately, then call your insurance company to file a claim if you wish to, then call an IICRC certified restoration company.
Not all Restoration companies are equal
Get to know your options and make sure to read reviews from their website and from review sites, inspect before and after pictures, and check certifications. This is not something that anyone can do, in fact the proper equipment and chemicals aren’t even available to those who are not properly trained, licensed and insured in this field, all of which cost thousands and thousands of dollars each year to renew not to mention the mind boggling costs to get trained. Hiring an amateur or someone who considers themselves a handyman will lead to future problems and a bigger bill in the long run, and often times these handymen cost triple what a normal emergency restoration company would charge in the first place.

Sparrows Point/Essex/Chase Smoke and Soot Cleanup
11/16/2017 (Permalink)
Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Home
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Sparrows Point/Essex/Chase will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
